Trout Lake is a pretty specific area of East Vancouver, surrounding John Hendry Park, which contains the famous, Trout Lake. The park itself is huge, at 27 hectares, with Trout Lake being the main draw. The park itself offers soccer fields, baseball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts, concession stands, public washrooms, picnic areas, dog parks, trails and a dedicated swimming area in Trout Lake, along with lots of trees, lush grassy areas and to top it off, mountain views.

Real Estate around Trout Lake

One of the biggest considerations for Real Estate near Trout Lake is the bog, or soft land around the south and west sides of the park. This should be a consideration to anyone looking to buy in the area as it could lead to sinking or foundation issues, which are expensive to deal with. Otherwise they have some great options in the neighbourhood, with prices similar to that of Fraser, Knight, Victoria and of course, Grandview. Houses sitting on a hill, or with 2 storeys might have a view of the mountains, and there are lots of older, charming heritage homes in the neighbourhood.

There are quite a few newer townhouse developments going up near the south end of Trout Lake (around Victoria), with some new condos planned for the area around the Commercial Drive Skytrain Station as well.

At the north end of Trout Lake is East 12th, which gives anyone good access to the highway and the rest of East Van.

Restaurants around Trout Lake

If you’re in the area, you’re at the end of Commercial Drive (at the Victoria Diversion) so the Drive would be your nearest area with amenities and shops (and of course, condos and townhomes), while a few blocks south of the area is Kingsway, where you can find a plethora of restaurants (many different kinds of Asian cuisines) and amenities. I don’t have to talk about how great Commercial Drive is for restaurants in the city, as it’s one of the top spots to go for everything from a quick dinner, to nice evenings out.

Shops and Amenities around Trout Lake

John Hendry Park is home to the newer Trout Lake Community Centre that offers an ice rink, gym, weight room, sauna, classes, dance studios, art studios and games room, along with programs for adults and kids. There is also an outdoor performance plaza which offers performances in the warmer months. Located at 3360 Victoria Drive (at 19th).

Trout Lake hosts a Vancouver Farmer’s Market every Saturday (at Lakewood and 13th Ave) in the warmer months. It’s the original of the Farmer’s Market and is always a nise place to go on the weekends as you can pick up some delicious market fare and walk through the park.
