Main is area of Vancouver that centers around Main St. The boundaries of Main are E 18th Ave. to the north, W49th Ave. to the south, Ontario St. to the west, and Prince Edward St. to the east.
This area of Main (South of 18th and East of Ontario St.) offers a rare mix of independent cafes, eclectic antique stores, shops showcasing local designers, other labels or no label “gently used” clothes, and some great restaurant choices ranging from classic diners to a nice night out. Quite the hipster locale, the Main area has seen a surge of more young professionals and creative types, as real estate in this area is still more affordable than the Westside, with the amenities of city living nearby. A plethora of buses head down Main St, with the Main Street-Science World Skytrain station at Terminal Ave and Main St. Queen Elizabeth Park and the Hillcrest Community Centre won’t be far away from your Main St address.
The Main Street district is one of the smallest Real Estate districts in the city. Spanning 27 blocks North-South and about 6 blocks East-West, all of the homes in this area are only a few blocks to Main Street. The Main district also encompasses an area known as Riley Park and Little Mountain.
This area of town is mostly detached homes, but there are some 1 and 2 bedroom condos near Main St available thanks to a few older condo buildings, and a few recent developments, particularly Bluetree Homes on Main and The Riley. I bet quite a few more developments will start building in the next few years, but for now, being a few blocks out of the most vibrant part of Main St will get you a slightly bigger unit than a normal Vancouver Condo, and a parking stall. Keep your eye out for new restaurants, bars and shops to creep into this part of Main thanks to cheaper commercial rents as well.
Looking at detached houses near Main St, you’ll start to see quite a few options, though prices are increasing quickly. You’ll find some great character homes on some great streets, as well as some tar downs and fixer-uppers. A few Vancouver Specials near Main St dot this area as well. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover here – many of these homes have renovated interiors and tons of potential. However, there is a bog (soft ground that can lead to “sinking” houses), which is between Main and Fraser from about 15th to 30th – watch out for this area and have your inspector do a thorough inspection of the ground and foundation. This is a great neighbourhood for families in Vancouver.
