Renfrew is a large neighbourhood that lies on the eastern side of Vancouver. The boundaries of Renfrew are Hastings St. to the north, Grandview Highway to the south, Nanaimo St. to the west, and Boundary Rd. to the east.
Renfrew sits along the most eastern point of Vancouver East, just south of Hastings-East (The East Village). Being one of the earlier developed suburbs of the city, the area shows its age in the real estate. Luckily, that is slowly changing since it’s one of the last remaining good price points in Vancouver (for a single family detached home). This area has great street appeal (big trees, kids playing outside, and homes set back from the sidewalk), lots of redeveloped homes (and homes with potential to be redeveloped) and it’s a great place to get in the market early and watch the value grow. Lacking some of the nearby amenities, Renfrew is truly a Real Estate market for Families looking to settle down and own a house.
There are quite a few parks in the area, including the large Rupert Park (with a Pitch and Putt course), as well as easy access to Burnaby and Highway 1 and the Skytrain at Renfrew and Rupert along the Grandview Hwy. The Renfrew community centre offers a library, community centre and pool, playgrounds, sports fields and more.
In terms of the condos and attached homes in Renfrew, they’re all typically scattered throughout the area, though there has been, and will continue to be, new development around the Skytrain stations. There are newer developments called “Jasmine”, “Sesame” and “Sugar” that have modern finishings (think granite, laminate floors, etc) and affordable prices. Many of the condos in this area offer 2 or 3 bedroom units to accommodate families.
Move up the price curve and you’ll find single family houses. Renfrew homes for sale on the less expensive end of the market are typically smaller than normal (around 1500sqft) or require a full renovation to be livable (they are sold as land value only). Lots of these homes offer suites in the basement (to help pay the mortgage). You can find some great homes for smaller families – definitely livable with and most have a separate suite as well. As with every area of town, the closer you are to the better amenities (think parks, vibrant streets, etc), the higher the price tag.
